Count down to B's fourth birthday
Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, 7:46 pm

On this day, four years ago, I was nine months pregnant, three days overdue. I couldn't tie my shoes, always wore slip-ons, and other than a tiny bit of water retention, I felt great. In nine months of pregnancy, I never had one moment of nausea or anything remotely resembling "morning sickness." By this time, four years ago, I had occasional contractions, which I didn't know were contractions, as it just felt like normal baby kicks to me.

I was ready, couldn't wait, in fact. I (we) did everything the Old Wives said to do to promote the onset of labor, to get things going. Nothing worked. Walking, housework, spicey Mexican food, (careful) sex and lots of it...all to no avail. At one point I thought I felt something happening, but it stopped as suddenly as it started.

It would be three more days before B would make her grand entrance to this world.
