We go swimming, sort of.
Monday, Jul. 21, 2003, 8:44 pm

I will never complain about paying full price at the swimming pool again. Even though $3 per person for an hour in the pool seems like highway robbery, compared to the mob scene we experienced tonight, the relative peace and quiet that $3 per hour brings is well worth it.

Every Monday night from 7-8 pm they have open swim for $1. Thought it sounded like a bargain, so off we went. Oh. My. God. The line to get in was all the way out to the parking lot when we got there. They kept a tally of those they let in, and when they reached a certain number (something 5 trillion it seemed like), they wouldn't let anybody else in. P got there right after they had turned away about 50 people. So he tells them his wife and daughter are already inside, and he's just gonna sit on the bench poolside and watch. Okay they say. No problem! So they let him in.

Well, he's already in his swim trunks, he's wearing no shoes, and all he has with him is his towel and car keys. What would you do?

So he got about half an hour in the pool, which was enough to cool him down after a scorcher of a day. But the people. Oh, the people! Too many kids, not enough room, too much screaming, splashing, and jumping. It was a chance to get wet and cool down, but nothing more.

We've been to this pool many times this summer. We've always gone during "family hour" or "open swim" in which we've paid full price. And we've practically had the pool to ourselves, so we were spoiled.

I will never go to $1 night again. Never ever ever. No way, no how. There's a reason they charge $3 most of the time. It keeps the crowds down and makes the pool way more enjoyable for those who are willing to pay the price.

Which I am. Apparently.
