Trick or Treat
Friday, Nov. 01, 2002, 6:34 am

There just can't be anything cuter than a 2 year old trick or treating for the very first time.

We were a little worried that B wasn't quite old enough to do the trick or treating thing. Wee little kids can get very shy and scared, and we feared the whole thing would consist of us pushing her to do something she didn't want to do.

Turns out, we had nothing to worry about.

We took her to a neighborhood near where we live, where there are nice houses, lit streets, sidewalks, and lots of other kids trick or treating. Figured if she saw other kids doing it, she'd be more likely to try it herself.

I took her up to the door of the first house, showed her how to push the doorbell, and say "trick or treat" when somebody answered the door, and stick her bag out. And then they would put CANDY in the bag! Then we say "thank you" and "Happy Halloween" and go off to the next house.

Didn't know how many times I'd have to repeat these instructions. Wasn't sure if she'd really "get it" or not.

Oh, let me tell you. She GOT IT. She took off running. No fear, no hesitation. Bright smiles, lots of "twick or tweat" and "tank you" and "happeeeee halloweeeeeen!!!" going on. And people LOVE this, you know? A cute kid, parents beaming in the background, a kid who smiles, says the right things, says thank you and happy halloween. Those people were putting HANDFULS of candy into her bag. We were only out there for 30 minutes, and at one point, me and P had to empty her bag into our coat pockets to make room for more candy, and because her bag was getting too heavy for her to carry. It was nuts!

We all had such a good time. I love witnessing B's "firsts". That child amazes me, she really does. There are times she exudes what can only be described as pure joy -- at the simplest things -- and it tugs at my heart so strongly.

I was speaking to a friend the other day, who just couldn't be bothered with taking her kids trick or treating. She shuffled that job onto her husband - he didn't mind it so much.

I think she's foolish. These years go by all too quickly. I say, seize the opportunity to marvel in EVERYTHING your kids do. So you don't like trick or treating? Too bad! This isn't about you, Mom!

That's all Im going to say about that!

Hope your Halloween was just as fun as ours!
