Who are these people with no souls?
Friday, Oct. 05, 2001, 4:46 am

You'd think that in light of the events of the past few weeks, people would try to reign in their depravity. Apparently not so with a few from this area.

On the news the other night they reported that someone had stolen all the American flags from the memorial cemetery out here in Covington.

Tahoma National Cemetery is the final resting place for many Americans from this area who have served their country in the armed forces. And I'm sure others are buried out there, as well, but it's like a miniature Arlington. Very beautiful. The entrance into the cemetery is a long flag-pole lined lane, which, up until a few days ago, proudly displayed the flag every 10 feet or so, along both sides. Not to mention the individual flags placed on gravesites. Many of the flags along the lane were donated by the families of those who are buried there.

And now they're all gone.

Someone went there in the middle of the night and stole all the flags.

What is the matter with some people?

There was a knock on my door yesterday afternoon. It was the sister-in-law of the couple who, until a few months ago, lived next door to us. They relocated to the east coast and their house is presently for sale. Rosemary and Eddie. The perfect empty nesters. Very nice people.

She said that Rosemary wanted her to let us know that Eddie was on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon.

Til now the tragedy hadn't really touched us personally. Like all Americans, we were horrified and saddened immensely by the events, but we knew no one who had been killed. Until now.

It's supposed to rain this weekend. That's fine with me. I sort of feel like staying in and watching the madness of the world from the safety of my living room. I don't much feel like venturing out into it.
