The doctor finally called back today. The advice he got from his colleague at Children's was to schedule a CT scan with contrast dye. So B has an appointment at the hospital next Wednesday at 7 a.m. The worst part of it will be the I.V. Last summer, when she had blood work done, it proved to be traumatic for her. For the CT scan, I asked for a sedative for B, but maybe I should have asked for one for myself.
The phrase the ENT specialist keeps throwing out there is "Congenital Bronchogenic Cyst." That's his guess right now. It's formed during gestation, when the parts that make up the throat are making their way to the inside of the fetus' body. A little piece of tissue doesn't attach the way it's supposed to, and shows up later as a cystic lesion, and can have connections to the trachea, esophagus, and other parts of the throat, which can make its removal tricky. If this is what it is, and if all goes well, they can surgically remove the cyst and all of its connective parts through an incision in the neck.
Of course, we won't know anything for sure until after the doctor reviews the CT scan. And because B's so little, they have to have a pediatric specialist on hand, an anesthesiologist, and some special get-up in radiology to accomodate her. So they couldn't just schedule us for any old time they had open. Thus, the week long wait.
P is determined not to worry about it, and I really shouldn't either. But it's hard not to.
Thanks for the supportive and kind messages. They mean a lot!
