A four-day weekend and the weather is crap. Yesterday we took advantage of having to stay indoors and cleaned out the kids room to make way for the little desk weve been storing in the basement for yearsPs old desk from college. A few coats of paint (perhaps next weekend) and it will look great.

We always said we wanted to put a computer up there for the kids. Now that both B and K are internet users, I have to wait in line to use my own computer. Ps got his office downstairs, but neither child seems to want to go down there to use it. During weekends when K is here (like this one), I have to plead for computer time just to check my email. So, for a long time, weve wanted to get a computer up there for them. We just didnt want to spend the money on it.

Then, a few weeks ago, my niece called to say her computer had given up the ghost. Wouldnt work at all. All her photos and music were lost. And she asked P to build a new computer for her (his hobby). Of course, he agreed, and two weekends ago we made the four-hour roadtrip and took it to her. Without going into a lot of detail, Ill just say her new computer is better than any computer Ive ever used before, and she was thrilled with it. (Could have been the colorful LCD lights P put inside the transparent case). Anyway, P got it all hooked up and running for her, and then inquired about the dead computer. In a corner, on the floor it sat. He asked if he could bring it home with us to see if he could somehow salvage her photos and music. Sure, she said. Saves her from having to throw it away.

He set to work on it immediately, and the first thing he ascertained was that it wasnt really dead, although it was doing a good impression of it. Im not a computer person, so I cant really describe what he did to it, but after many hours and late nights spent tinkering on it, he emerged from his lab victorious. Not only had he retrieved the lost files, he had discovered the reason for its demise, and had performed life saving surgery on it. In a nutshell, it was good as new. Not only that, it was a really really good computer, with lots of dis, dat, and de udder ting, and he was sooooo excited.

Next thing we know, were shopping for a wireless card, wireless keyboard and mouse, speakers, and flat panel monitor. All of which have been put together to create the perfect computer for the kids room. And it was all done for less than $500 because that P knows what he wants and how to shop for it.

Hence the need for the desk, which was free.

So I have my computer all to myself once again, which is nice. I doubt that means Ill find the time to actually write more, but you never know.
